New rules for returning Ministers

Ministers returning to serve with the Uniting Church after having previously left are now able to return through a process similar to those candidating for ordained ministry.

The process has previously been similar to that of receiving a minister from another church.

Ms Kay Dowling, member of the Assembly Standing Committee, introduced the proposal to change the process during the 13th Assembly on Friday 20 July.

“This is quite a significant change and one that the Standing Committee believes would better service the church,” she said.

Ms Dowling said that there may be reasons behind why the minister left, which should have the opportunity to be addressed through a relevant process.

“These reasons need to be assessed during a period of discernment,” she said.
