29. FACILITATING COOPERATIVE ARRANGEMENTS WITH CONGREGATIONS OF OTHER DENOMINATIONS (Synod of NSW / ACT)

That the Assembly resolve to

1. request the Standing Committee to appoint a Task Group to undertake a study of any changes to the Uniting Church Constitution and Regulations and any other actions that would facilitate Uniting Church congregations and Faith Communities entering into cooperative arrangements with congregations of other denominations; and

2. request the Task Group to bring a report and recommendations to the Standing Committee, with a view to it bringing any proposed changes to the Regulations to the 14th Assembly.

Rationale:

There is a willingness of many congregations and faith communities across the life of the Uniting Church to enter into cooperative arrangements with congregations of other denominations. The UCA is committed to ongoing exploration of how to best facilitate ecumenical co-operation. Notwithstanding this will in the church for ecumenical cooperation there are times when our structures, and the regulations that lie behind them, militate against such cooperation being as effective as it might otherwise be. Therefore it seems appropriate for the UCA to undertake a process which studies where these blockages for cooperation may be in its Constitution and Regulations and to give consideration to how such obstacle might be overcome.
